Gimme some water…..

Eddie Money knew how to ask for it, but your lawn, shrubs and trees don’t have that ability, at least on this planet. A good way to judge whether a plant needs water is to stick your index finger into the ground at the base of the plant. If soil sticks to your finger, there is adequate moisture available to the roots. If no soil sticks, then follow these tips to get you and your yard through the dog days of summer . . .

  • Water in late evening or at night. Heavy watering during the day can do more harm than good. Besides the fact that 80% of the moisture can evaporate before it becomes available to the plant, it can sit on foliage and actually “scorch” the plant.
  • Once a lawn, shrub or tree is established, water less frequently for longer periods of time. This allows for deeper moisture penetration in the soil and encourages deeper root growth thereby ensuring healthier plants.
  • A good, simple and cheap water gauge is an empty tuna can. Place it where you are running a sprinkler and when it fills up, you know you have given your lawn 1” of water.
